The Linux Foundation Delivers New Licensing Terms, Testing Tools for Accessibility Interfaces

By making IAccessible2 available under the BSD license, more applications will be available to persons with disabilities

SAN FRANCISCO, July 6, 2010 – The Linux Foundation, the nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating the growth of Linux, today announced that its Open Accessibility Workgroup is releasing IAccessible2 for Windows under the BSD license. It is also announcing the availability of AccProbe, a new desktop application testing tool that is available under the BSD license.

AccProbe uses IAccessible2 platform services to assist developers in discovering and correcting code problems in their Windows applications. It was developed in Eclipse by IBM and donated to The Linux Foundation’s Open Accessibility Workgroup.

At this year’s CSUN Conference on Disabilities, Adobe Systems Incorporated discussed plans to support IAccessible2 in the next major releases of Adobe® Acrobat® and Adobe Reader®. IAccessible2 is already supported in IBM Lotus Symphony, Firefox, and Eclipse. Assistive Technology (AT) vendors supporting the API include JAWS, NVDA, Window-Eyes and ZoomText.

“Adobe applauds The Linux Foundation’s release of IAccessible2 under a BSD license,” said Andrew Kirkpatrick, group product manager for Accessibility at Adobe. “IAccessible2 contains important technological improvements that we plan to incorporate into upcoming versions of Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash® Player, and Adobe AIR® in order to continue improving on existing accessibility support in these products.”

The license change to BSD makes it easier to integrate open source AT into proprietary Windows environments, making programs more accessible to computer users with disabilities. Because the BSD license is designed to allow software released under the license to be incorporated into proprietary products, Windows users with disabilities can gain access to more applications while all Windows users will experience more reliable, fully tested applications.

“The Open Accessibility workgroup is working hard to ensure all developers can incorporate the IAccessible2 API into their work for the benefit of all persons with disabilities,” said Jim Zemlin, executive director at The Linux Foundation. “By transitioning to the BSD license and providing important testing tools for developers, the workgroup is demonstrating our commitment to computer access for all.”

IAccessible2 is accessibility API for Windows and facilitates access to applications like Firefox and IBM Lotus Symphony for persons with disabilities. It fills critical accessibility API gaps left by Microsoft’s Active Accessibility API (MSAA). Various governments worldwide are mandating accessibility in electronic and information services. For example, the U.S. government’s $40 billion annual budget for IT procurement complies with the law popularly known as “Section 508,” which is moving towards requiring API-based accessibility services.

ATs enable individuals who are blind or visually impaired to read online text and provide the means for individuals who do not have the use of their arms and hands to write and correspond. ATs also enable individuals who cannot speak or hear to participate on today’s teleconferences. For Windows developers, IAccessible2 implementation may be added to their existing MSAA-enabled applications in order to support richer functionality.

“The Linux Foundation’s IAccessible2 standard has contributed to the accessibility of essential industry technologies such as ODF, WAI-ARIA, and now Adobe’s PDF, ” said Rich Schwerdtfeger, CTO Accessibility, IBM Software. IBM’s donation of IAccessible2 continues to gain momentum, and the adoption of BSD licensing is just another example of how truly open communities like the Open Accessibility Working Group are responding to meet the needs of the broader industry.”

“AccProbe is the only game in town for developers and testers who wish to leverage IAccessible2 in their desktop applications or test rich Internet applications in IA2-enabled browsers,” said Michael Squillace, IBM Human Ability and Accessibility Center Software Engineer. “Extending our commitment to support AccProbe for The Linux Foundation IAccessible2 effort can help developers make applications more accessible for people with disabilities.”

Linux Foundation Announces Linux.com Store T-shirt Design Winner

Nearly 8,000 votes determine community’s favorite Linux-themed design, to be displayed on T-shirts at LinuxCon and in Linux.com Store

SAN FRANCISCO, June 23, 2010 – The Linux Foundation, the nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating the growth of Linux, today announced the winning design in its Linux.com Store T-shirt Design Contest, “The People’s Product.” The design won by a large margin with 57 percent (4,501) of all votes cast, with the other five finalists sharing 43 percent of the vote among them.

The winning design was created by Mr. Said Hassan who says it “represents the collective work of the people. It’s a celebration of our efforts: Linux is our product.” Mr. Hassan rallied bloggers and local television stations around his design, garnering a number of articles and television interviews about his submission. He is a marketing consultant at SADAF Technology Development in Gaza in Palestine.

As the designer, Mr. Hassan is receiving travel expenses and a free pass to LinuxCon in Boston this August where “The People’s Product” design will be displayed on Linux.com Store merchandise and available for purchase. The design is expected to be available on T-shirts in the Linux.com Store this summer.

The contest was launched with the opening of the Linux.com Store, which is an online marketplace where people can purchase items from an exclusive line of original T-shirts, hats, mugs and other items that reflect “geek culture.” Six finalists were chosen from more than 100 design entries. Nearly 8,000 votes were cast during the month of May as designers competed for the grand prize and encouraged their personal networks to get out the vote.

“The People’s Product design is an important addition to the Linux.com Store merchandise selection and will help generate revenue for activities that advance the Linux operating system,” said Amanda McPherson at The Linux Foundation. “We also hope that the Linux.com Store T-shirt Design Contest will bring attention to Mr. Hassan and others like him who support and contribute to Linux in a variety of important ways.”

All revenue generated from the Linux.com Store goes directly towards Linux Foundation activities, events and strategic initiatives. The Linux Foundation uses funds from a variety of revenue streams to support the work of Linux creator Linus Torvalds and to sustain important services such as technical events; travel grants for open source community members; a vendor-neutral forum for projects such as MeeGo; and free training resources direct from the kernel community; among others.

Linux Foundation Appoints Director of China Operations

Linux veteran Cliff Miller brings Asia-Pacific market expertise to bridge community and industry in China

SAN FRANCISCO, May 11, 2010 — The Linux Foundation (LF), the nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating the growth of Linux, today announced it has appointed Cliff Miller as its new Director of China Operations. Miller will work with companies and community members in the country to help advance strategic initiatives such as MeeGo and to facilitate collaboration with exclusive events, training workshops and technical workgroups.

“China represents an important part of the Linux community,” said Jim Zemlin, executive director, The Linux Foundation. “Chinese companies and Linux developers are helping build some of tomorrow’s most innovative technologies and are running Linux in enterprises across the country. Cliff will help bring together Linux stakeholders in China to accelerate Linux work.”

A recent study from Springboard Research and Spiceworks reported that Linux server adoption among small and midsize businesses (SMBs) is 25 percent higher in the Asia-Pacific region and growing faster than the worldwide average. Miller will help harness this momentum and bring stakeholders together to advance the platform in China.

“Before long, there will be over a billion people in China connecting with each other via mobile phones, PCs and other devices,” said Cliff Miller, Director of China Operations for The Linux Foundation. “And what better way to make their experience quick, reliable and fun than to use Linux? I’m eager to enable broader Linux use through promoting give-and-take among Chinese developers, consumers and companies.”

Miller co-founded TurboLinux in 1992, bringing commercial Linux to Japan and China in the 1990s. He also co-founded Mountain View Data in 2000, which provided Linux-based data storage software and server provisioning software to the enterprise. He has served as Director of Linux International and is the author of “The Linux Revolution” (Softbank Publishing 1999). Miller negotiated some of the industry’s first commercial Linux bundling deals with Dell, HP, IBM, NEC, Panasonic, Oracle and Sybase, among others. Today, Miller also works as Chief Strategy Officer at DeviceVM.

Linux Foundation Appoints Director of Taiwan Operations

Taiwan-based Alex Lu will bring together consumer device makers and Linux developers to advance the platform for next-generation computing

SAN FRANCISCO, May 11, 2010 — The Linux Foundation (LF), the nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating the growth of Linux, today announced it has appointed Alex Lu as its new Director of Taiwan Operations. Lu will use his experience working with consumer device makers in Taiwan to advance collaboration on strategic mobile initiative such as MeeGo.

“The global movement towards ubiquitous mobile computing would not be taking place if it weren’t for the people and companies in Taiwan,” said Jim Zemlin, executive director, The Linux Foundation. “New competitive pressures and widening market opportunities are leading Taiwanese companies to adopt Linux even more, and there is no one more naturally suited to facilitate collaboration on Linux in Taiwan than Alex Lu.”

With initiatives such as Android and MeeGo, analyst estimates indicate that Linux is the fastest-growing platform for mobile computing – on phones, laptops, MIDs, infotainment devices, and more. Taiwan, in particular, is a hotbed for mobile and embedded development, and there are a variety of companies in the country that today are increasing their participation in the Linux development community and initiatives such as MeeGo. Lu’s work will help focus efforts and advance Linux on PCs as well as on for mobile and embedded computing.

“Taiwan may be a small island but it packs a global punch when it comes to computer and electronics manufacturing,” said Alex Lu, Director of Taiwan Operations for The Linux Foundation. “There is a great opportunity to share technical expertise and marketing power between the Linux development community and Taiwan companies. I’m looking forward to helping bring together these important stakeholders to advance Linux.”

Lu’s career includes eight years at Applied Materials and a role as Vice President of Finance for the Monte Jade Science and Technology Association, a nonprofit organization dedicated to combining high tech expertise from the Bay area and Asia. Lu is also a co-founder at DeviceVM and, as the senior vice president of Business Development, continues to close worldwide contracts with leading OEMs (Acer, ASUS, Lenovo, LG and Sony, among others), leading Linux to tens of millions of netbooks, notebooks and desktops. Lu received his BS in Chemical Engineering from Tunghai University, Taiwan and MBA from Drexel University.

Managed Hosting Provider ServInt Joins Linux Foundation

Pioneer in web hosting joins Linux Foundation to advance virtualization technologies that deliver “greener” IT

SAN FRANCISCO, May 4, 2010 – The Linux Foundation, the nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating the growth of Linux, today announced that managed hosting provider ServInt is its newest member.

ServInt is joining The Linux Foundation to take advantage of exclusive networking events and online and face-to-face workgroup collaboration on Virtualization and Green Linux.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, data centers accounted for 1.5 percent of American energy consumption in 2006; that number is expected to double by next year (2011). By implementing a virtualization strategy that revolves around Linux, IT hosting providers like ServInt are able to help minimize that consumption and reduce overall costs for customers.

“Linux helps us meet our commitments to innovation and energy savings for our customers, and our Linux Foundation membership will allow us to contribute back to the community,” said Reed Caldwell, founder and chief executive officer of ServInt. “We’re proud to take this important step in reaffirming our commitment to Linux and the open source community.”

“ServInt understands the value of Linux in shaping the future of IT management, and its contribution to the Linux Foundation will help advance the platform for that future,” said Amanda McPherson, vice president, marketing and developer programs, The Linux Foundation.
